Have an earache? Don't seek antibiotic

A new study suggests doctors are too quick to prescribe antibiotics for patients with ear infections - a practice health experts believe is contributing to the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. The study, conducted by the insurance company Premera Blue Cross and the University of Washington, found that doctors prescribed antibiotics for two-thirds of patients with ear infections. But more than half of all ear infections are caused by viruses, not bacteria. Antibiotics kill bacteria but have no effect on viral diseases.
