Politician put his family before job

John Thomas Anderson Jr. wore a lot of hats. Throughout his life he was a war veteran, a newspaper journalist, a politician and an entrepreneur. But more than anything he was a father to four daughters and a husband to one very loving wife, his family said.

John Anderson (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. John Thomas Anderson, Jr., 81, beloved husband of Mrs. Dorothy James Anderson, entered into rest on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Crawford Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Mr. Anderson was a native of Augusta. He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County, Augusta State University, and the University of Georgia's Grady School of Journalism. He served as a Richmond County Commissioner, and was on the Board of Health, as well as the Board of the Augusta Library. He was also the originator of the 100-year time capsule on the Richmond County Courthouse grounds. He retired from Babcock and Wilcox Company after 35 years, where he manager of public affairs and government relations. He founded, and was the first president of the Babcock and Wilcox Company Credit Union, now known as the Augusta Metro Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church for over 70 years, where he was Chairman of the Deacons, Training Union Director, Young Married Couples Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Director, and Deacon Emeritus. He served two tours of active duty in the United States Navy, and retired from the Naval Reserves with the rank of lieutenant. He and his wife, Dorothy, were looking forward to their 60th wedding anniversary, which would have been on August 31, 2007. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four daughters and sons in law, Beverly A. Deal and husband, Butch, of Mars Hill, N.C., Sarah A. "Teri" Perry and husband, Dennis, Hope A. Remsen and husband, Bill, and Elizabeth A. "Beth" Meagher, and husband, Patrick, all of Evans. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Todd Dyches and wife, Stephanie, Michael Perry, Lisa Perry, John Thomas Perry, Clayton Perry, Brennan Meagher, David Meagher, Avery Meagher, Ryan Meagher, and Delaney Remsen, his two brothers, William A. Anderson, and wife, Bobbie, and Richard L. Anderson and wife Joan, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mattilee and Tom Anderson, Sr., and his two brothers, Ray Anderson and Archie Bennett. Pallbearers will be Steve Yonce, Lewis Brown, Will Sherrill, Bob Knight, Mike Russell, Brian Munford and Kevin Pollock.
