First Union chief leads merged bank

Wachovia Corp. has named First Union Augusta President Paul Menk to head the merged organization's area branches. The decision announced Thursday means Mr. Menk will oversee most of Wachovia-First Union's $1 billion consumer and commercial banking operations spread across Augusta, North Augusta, Aiken and Edgefield. The new Wachovia was created by its Sept. 1 merger with First Union Corp. "Wachovia has a bunch of great employees, and I'm looking forward to working with them instead of competing against them," Mr. Menk said.
