FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- If the world's leading chess federation gets its way, the game will be included in the Olympics - as long as the competitors agree to the drug tests. The Federation Internationale des Echecs, the organization leading the push, has already begun testing for substances banned at the Olympics in an effort to boost its credentials. That has rankled some players who call drug-testing in chess a logistical headache and a logical absurdity.
While most children his age are playing with Power Rangers or Barbie dolls, 4-year-old Daniel Brachey plots to capture enemy kings. Although not yet enrolled in school, Daniel is a member of North Columbia Elementary School's chess team, and helped his team recently bring home a sixth place trophy from a national tournament in Tennessee involving 4,000 players. "He's amazing. I'm fairly certain he was the youngest player at Nationals," said North Columbia chess coach Wayne Warner.
