Bones came from grave dirt

A human jawbone and spine found in a pile of dirt at the Arts in the Heart of Augusta festival probably came from an unmarked grave at a city cemetery after fill dirt from the cemetery was used to level off potholes in the gravel lot across from Augusta Common.

Perfecting home turf

Your odds of playing football in Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., where the New England Patriots face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in the Super Bowl, are pretty much nil. On the other hand, the odds of having a lawn as green and lush as the turf there are a lot better.

Salary inequities irk Augusta officials

In Augusta government, women can't make the top 40. The 40 highest-paid jobs are all filled by men. Some folks call it tradition that the majority of women in city government rank near the bottom of the pay scale. Vera Butler calls it something else: a shame. Mrs. Butler has worked 21 years for the county. As clerk of Civil and Magistrate Court, she oversees a $500,000 budget and supervises 19 people with a workload of more than 20,000 court cases and civil actions every year.
