Olympics a valuable franchise again

The TV ratings for the Salt Lake City Olympics were comparable to those for the last Winter Games staged in North America. With a whopping 22.3 for Sunday's closing ceremony - tying the women's figure skating short program for the third-highest rating of the 17 nights - NBC finished with a 19.2 prime-time average. The rating is 18 percent higher than the 1998 Nagano Olympics on CBS, the lowest-rated Winter Games in 30 years, and it almost equals the 19.3 for the 1988 Calgary Games on ABC.

Tape-delayed TV Olympics are a snoozer

So I found myself turning to MSNBC really, really early Thursday morning hoping for some live Olympic coverage from Sydney. Maybe an innocuous team handball game. Maybe some trampolining. Maybe some synchronized diving. I do admit to being a sports fan every once in a while, one who finds the Olympian's plight interesting every four years. Since everyone in Australia seems to be in another hemisphere, any chance to feel nearby would be appreciated.

Anticipation mounts in Sidney

This is when the Olympics should be like NASA, when the countdown clock should have a big button somebody can push to halt everything just before blastoff.Because it would be great to hold the Olympics where they are now, on the greatest day Sydney has experienced in its long wait for greatness. For 1000 days, a continent has measured time in an anxious backward march. Little Xs on desk calendars have marked the passing weeks and mechanical billboards have clicked off the days until the start of the Olympics in Sydney.

...me tell you, that's a long way," my father-in-law said when he heard I would be coming to Australia for the 2000 Summer Games. "When you get to huh-why-a, you're halfway there." What he didn't say was that by the time you pass...

Hudson plans on waiting for the right offer

Ninety minutes after North Augusta's Jacob Hudson squeezed out a two-tiebreaker Goodwill Games semifinal win over a more experienced Russian boxer, the phone rang in his coach's New York hotel room. Tom Moraetes answered, and saying hello was boxing mega-mogul Shelley Finkel, the man in charge of resurrecting Mike Tyson's career and aiding Evander Holyfield and Pernell Whitaker's rise to boxing's elite. When a man like this calls, you listen very closely and take notes with your blood if you have to.

New boathouse not completed

The long-awaited, now half-finished, boathouse will have its grand opening Thursday, but U.S. National Sculling Center coach Igor Grinko said the center will consider leaving Augusta if his athletes aren't in by the fall. For years, city and local rowing officials have promised a top-notch training facility for his Olympic-bound athletes, only to see those plans mired in politics and budget constraints.
