Japanese nuclear reactor leaks traces of radioactivity

TOKYO (AP) - Officials shut down a nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan after it began leaking small amounts of radioactivity, a power company spokesman said Tuesday. Alarms started sounding late Monday at the plant when an exhaust monitor registered 20 times the normal level of radioactivity. The level dropped but rose again several hours later, prompting plant managers to stop operation. The cause of the leak was under investigation, said a spokesman for the plant's owner, the private Tokyo Electric Power Co.
