USC Aiken awarded $264,000 science grant

A $264,000 grant from the National Science Foundation will fund the purchase of a state-of-the-art microscope and research at the University of South Carolina Aiken's chemistry department.A Raman microscope, which is used for spectroscopy and imaging applications, will be the only one of its kind at any South Carolina higher education institution, according to the university.

Aiken County reports fire

AIKEN -- Aiken County Sheriffs Office and other emergency crews are extinguishing a fire at an Aiken County home. Fire crews were dispatched to the blaze at the home in the 2100 block of Green Pond Road outside of Jackson around 4 p.m., said an Aiken County 911 dispatcher. The dispatcher could not confirm whether there are victims in the blaze.
