Riverfront plans focus of chamber

NORTH AUGUSTA - When the much-anticipated River Club of North Augusta opens this fall, it won't be soon enough for Mayor Lark Jones. "I hope I'm the first person who has ever hit golf balls down there," he said Wednesday at a North Augusta Chamber of Commerce meeting that focused on riverfront redevelopment. Mr. Jones said he already had "hit about five balls down there," even though River Club doesn't open until Dec. 1. The grass is growing and has even been cut at the course on the Savannah River banks.

Rover Club of North Augusta to open this fall

NORTH AUGUSTA - They've been moving dirt on that tract of land between the 13th and Fifth Street bridges along the Savannah River since the early 1990s, promising that a golf course would one day emerge. A change in ownership brought about delays, but the long wait is almost over. The course, to be called River Club of North Augusta and owned by the North Augusta Golf Venture, is scheduled to open in late fall. It will be a daily fee public course with single, family and corporate memberships available. Details on memberships will be announced later.

At the same time, the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce has recently decided to seek more independence from the Metro chamber in its development efforts.
