AIKEN -- David Fields has been terminated as Emergency Preparedness coordinator from Aiken County, four months after the Coast Guard veteran was hired. Assistant County Administrator Joan Wilson confirmed reports Thursday that Mr. Fields is no longer employed with the county. "That's personnel information which is private," she said. Mr. Fields, a North Carolina native, had ended 23 years with the Coast Guard last year to take the job. He took the position to be near his parents in Aiken County.

Celebrating freedom via Memorial Day

Some will come dressed in uniforms long ago retired. When the American flag passes and the National Anthem is played, they will bring their hands to their hearts or their hats in salute. And when the bugler blows Taps, some eyes will water, because crying then is a reflex for those who served their country or lost loved ones in that service. While the rest of the world celebrates a holiday, veterans, their families and patriotic others will honor the nation's war dead on Memorial Day.
