AIKEN -- David Fields has been terminated as Emergency Preparedness coordinator from Aiken County, four months after the Coast Guard veteran was hired. Assistant County Administrator Joan Wilson confirmed reports Thursday that Mr. Fields is no longer employed with the county. "That's personnel information which is private," she said. Mr. Fields, a North Carolina native, had ended 23 years with the Coast Guard last year to take the job. He took the position to be near his parents in Aiken County.

Boxer's killer gets additional jail time An Augusta man convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison last month got an additional five-year prison sentence Friday. David Anthony Fisher, 33, pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court to two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms. It was while he was being investigated this year in connection with an unsolved 1991 homicide that it was discovered Mr. Fisher, a convicted felon, had pawned several guns.
Some will come dressed in uniforms long ago retired. When the American flag passes and the National Anthem is played, they will bring their hands to their hearts or their hats in salute. And when the bugler blows Taps, some eyes will water, because crying then is a reflex for those who served their country or lost loved ones in that service. While the rest of the world celebrates a holiday, veterans, their families and patriotic others will honor the nation's war dead on Memorial Day.

Everette works for the Directorate of Resource Management at Fort Gordon. U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood will attend. The U.S. Army Signal Corps band will play at the ceremony. -- At 11 a.m., Augusta-area veterans converge at the Veterans of All Wars Monument, at Fourth and Broad streets, for a wreath-laying ceremony.
