Two arrested in ongoing investigation into counterfeit scam

Police arrested two suspects Wednesday in an ongoing investigation to stifle a counterfeit cash scam in which phony $20-bills are being used to purchase hundreds of dollars in money orders. The Richmond County Sheriff's Department in conjunction with the U.S. Secret Service raided a residence in the 2000 block of Augusta's McDowell Street and arrested Carlston Coleman, 26, of that address, and his brother Centrell Coleman, 19, 3500 block of Windemere Drive. They were charged with first-degree forgery, a felony, said Chief Deputy Ronald Strength.

Knox, 61, business CEO, dies

Peter Seymour Knox III, prominent businessman and member of a prominent Augusta and Thomson family, died at his residence Sunday. Mr. Knox, 61, was chairman and chief executive officer of Augusta-based Merry Land & Investment Co. Inc. He is survived by his wife, Julia Patton Rimmer Knox; and his two sons, Peter Seymour Knox IV and David Allan Rimmer Knox; and one daughter, Julia Knox Lirette; all of Augusta. He also is survived by a brother, Boone Aiken Knox of Thomson; a sister, Nanci Knox Lewis of Waterford, Texas; four grandsons and one granddaughter.
