U.S. Open notebook

TULSA, Okla. - Phil Mickelson was one shot away from getting into a playoff with Payne Stewart in the 1999 U.S. Open. He came up short to Tiger Woods this year on the final nine of the Masters Tournament. Various and sundry other miscues and mishaps have resulted in other major championship disappointments for the player who's won 18 PGA Tour events, but none that will define a career. That's why Mickelson seemed content with an even-par 70 Thursday in the first round of the U.S. Open, which left him three shots behind clubhouse leader Hale Irwin.

'A very big boom'

ATLANTA - Morris News Service staff working on the interior of the Main Press Center (MPC) one block from the Centennial Olympic Park described the explosion as "a very big boom," which sent most security personell from the MPC running toward the park to investigate the explosion. Following the blast, eight or more injured persons were visible lying in the middle of Techwood Avenue. Within minutes, numerous officers began clearing the area, as onlookers seemed temporarily stunned from the explosion.
