Ready to roll

The Romans wiped their bottoms with sea sponges. The Vikings used scraps of wool. American settlers reached for leaves and corncobs. Then in 1890, rolled toilet paper was introduced by Scott Paper Co., and it has stuck with consumers ever since. Toilet paper has grown into a $4 billion-a-year business, but the country's largest toilet paper manufacturers are working to make the market even bigger. They are hoping to sell consumers on what they say is the next innovation in bathroom tissue: moistened wipes.
