ATLANTA -- Hayes Corp., a computer technology pioneer that fell behind the times, is shutting down after two decades. Some 250 employees were laid off Monday, leaving only a handful from a peak of 1,200 for the company that once dominated the personal-computer modem business. The company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and reorganization last Oct. 9, and had been talking to potential buyers. However, its primary lender notified the company it wouldn't continue funding efforts to keep Hayes alive.
NORCROSS, Ga. -- Ron Howard was picked Tuesday to succeed founder Dennis Hayes as chairman of Hayes Corp., a Norcross-based maker of computer modems. Howard has been the company's vice chairman and chief executive officer. Hayes will remain as a director and the largest individual shareholder in Hayes Corp., company officials said Monday. "I'm not sure what I want to do," Hayes said in an interview last week with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
