Ski chief calls for the 'courage' to change

VAIL, Colo. -- It will take courage as much as money for international skiing to thrive in the 21st century, the head of the sport says. "We are aware of the fact that in the new millennium, there will be a major fight between sports for television time, mainly in Europe but it might also be in North America," said Gian-Franco Kasper, president of the International Ski Federation. "We have a lot of special sports coming up. The old traditional sports will have to fight."

Ganong a forerunner for women's super-G

VAIL, Colo. -- Megan Ganong's name will be on the start list for the opening event of the World Alpine Ski Championships, yet there's not a chance in the world that she'll get a medal. Ganong, one of the young American speed skiers, is a forerunner for Monday's women's super-G, the opening event of the two-week ski circus at Vail and Beaver Creek resorts. Ganong obviously would rather be in the starting field chasing a medal, but she says she'll gain a lot from her assigned role that could help her in future championships.

Frenchman shocks field to win men's slalom

PARK CITY, Utah -- Pierrick Bourgeat will probably wake up with a sore dialing finger. But it's not every day you get to call home to France and share a first World Cup victory with family and friends. The 22-year-old Bourgeat didn't figure to be spending so much time chatting on the phone after Saturday's first run of a men's slalom. Blinded by a snowstorm and stunned when he hit himself in the chin with a ski pole, he staggered to a 14th-place finish. Visibility returned for the afternoon run and, despite huge ruts at some of the gates, Bourgeat took full advantage.
