BERLIN - The Nazis brutalized Berlin's art world, and the Soviets stole it. Now Berlin is trying to get back in the first rank of the world's art centers. The Nazis pulled thousands of paintings, sculptures and other pieces from museums and public collections, including works by Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, in their campaign against early modern, "degenerate" art. Much of it was either destroyed or sold abroad.
