Lorraine Surrency (THOMSON, Ga.)

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Lorraine Cousin Surrency, 61, of Thomson, Georgia departed this life on November 15, 2009, at Doctor's Hospital after a 20 year battle of illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 21,2009, at 1 :00 P.M. at Springfield Baptist Church. Thomson, with the Pastor, Rev. F.D. Favors officiating. Interment: Westview Cemetery. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Marian and Esner Cousin, Sr. Her early childhood was spent in Slidell, Louisiana where she attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. After moving to Fort Valley, Georgia, she attended Peach County public schools and graduated from H.A. Hunt High School. Lorraine furthered her education receiving a B.S. and M.S. of Education from Fort Valley State University. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church where she was an active member of the J .H. West Choir, and served on several committees until her health failed. Lorraine had the reputation of being an excellent middle grade educator. She taught for 29 years in four locations in Georgia: Appling, Taylor, Crawford, and McDuffie Counties. Her teaching was spread throughout McDuffie County School System at Laura Jones, Pine Street Elementary, R.L Norris and Thomson Middle School. Throughout her teaching years, she touched many lives of teachers, students, and parents. She provided many opportunities to a lot of students that were unable to participate in school and community activities and continued to carry them under her wings as her own even after retiring. She is survived by a devoted husband of 40 years Edward Donald Surrency; 1 son, Dr. Jacques Surrency, Fort Valley; 2 daughters, Nycole Reese, Hephzibah, & Donna Surrency, Thomson, 1 step-daughter, Cassandra (Bruce) Hill, Decatur, 8 grandchildren; 2 two sisters, Barbara (Walter) Latimore & Julia Cousin both of Fort Valley; 2 brothers, Tommy (Bobbie) Cousin, Decatur, & Esner (Sharon) Cousin, Jr., Detroit, MI; several nieces, nephews, relatives, classmates, educators, and many, many sorrowing friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday November 20, 2009 at the Thomson Funeral System, 505 Gordon Street, Thomson.
