Woman used to firsts

From the time she joined the Army, Col. Velma Richardson has often been a first. Commissioned in 1973, she was the first woman to serve as signal officer for the 1st Battalion of the 55th Air Defense Artillery at Fort Bliss, Texas. Now, she is Fort Gordon's first female deputy commander. Nominated for brigadier general's rank, she could soon become one of the first women to wear a star in the Signal Corps.
