Art history

For years, the unassuming house on Fifth Street sat forgotten and disintegrating. Its once golden, glowing heart of pine floors dimmed under years of accumulated grime. Many of the Victorian fixtures, the ornamental molding and fireplaces, had long since been stripped away, and the classic tin roof was in need of repair. To most, the abandoned structure, built at the turn of the 20th century, was an eyesore that had outlived its usefulness.

Ichabod imagery

Ichabod Crane would feel at home perusing the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art's latest exhibit. Kathleen Girdler Engler: Sources Past Change, on display through July 23 in the second-floor gallery, features 10 life-size and six small-figure sculptures. Many are headless, like poor Ichabod's horseman friend in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The mixed-media works are made mostly of scorched paper pulp, vines, rocks, barnacles, gesso and wasps' nests.

The spirit of images

A woman sits poolside reading a book, with the beach to her back and an ominous purple sky overhead in Lanny Webb's work Five More Pages. It looks like a watercolor, with its washed-out splashes of pink, contrasting bright yellows and various shades of green, but it's not. The piece is one of 25 digitally enhanced photographs in Southern Places: Digital Images by Lanny Webb, an exhibit opening tonight at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art.
