ATLANTA -- The parent company of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia announced Thursday it has agreed to extend its merger agreement with WellPoint Health Networks Inc. to allow time for the courts to rule on a lawsuit by its shareholders.
The last T-shirts at Delta Apparel's Washington, Ga., sewing plant will be stitched together no later than Aug. 29. Deborah Merrill, a spokeswoman for Duluth-based Delta, said layoffs for the 106 workers at the plant will begin Aug. 16. The work, which until recently included sweat shirt production, will be transferred to company's plants in Mexico and possibly Honduras. "We have no plans to close any other facilities," Ms. Merrill said, adding that Delta's 130-employee yarn mill in Edgefield is not at risk because of the Caribbean Basin Treaty.
