Construction equipment maker warns of smaller fourth-quarter profits

PEORIA, Ill. -- Caterpillar Inc. warned today its fourth-quarter profits will fall below expectations as farmers' economic problems and troubles overseas force it to heavily discount products and leave more inventories in stock. The maker of heavy equipment expects earnings for the period to be lower than the 92 cents a diluted share it reported in the third quarter of the year. Wall Street had expected the company to earn $1.06 a share, according to a survey of analysts by First Call Corp.
