It's time to finalize decisions on college

Butler High School senior Eugene Graham's mom is no nag, but she is persistent. Nearly every day for two months, she's been telling her son to get those college applications filled out and mailed. Eugene has been slow to follow through. So far, all he's done is make a list of college possibilities, with Georgia Tech in Atlanta topping the list. "I'm just a little lazy. I know it's going to take a lot of time, and I'm kind of nervous," said Eugene, 17. "It's a little bit of fear and a little bit of laziness."

New school has familiar look

If you've ever been inside of Columbia County's Greenbrier High School, you might think you're seeing double when you enter Richmond County's new Cross Creek High School. They used the same design and architects, but Richmond County officials asked Greenbrier personnel what they would have done differently. Richmond County officials used Greenbrier's recommendations to build a larger cafeteria, put larger doors between the mall-size hallways and add more electrical outlets.

Earl leaves lasting impression

The bite of Tropical Storm Earl could still be felt for weeks in the Augusta area. Draining water and sinking mud can continue to chew away at road shoulders and pavement for days and may create more washouts, said Mike Green, assistant director of public works for Richmond County. "There's a lot of road shoulder erosion," he said Friday afternoon as cleanup efforts continued. "There have been reports of sinkage. And we won't know about those problems until they occur. There's no way to predict them."

Few Extension on hold

A road extension expected to jump-start development behind Columbia County's Greenbrier High School is on indefinite hold due to skyrocketing right-of-way costs and complex environmental and wetlands issues. William Few Parkway, which crosses Washington Road and dead-ends near the Board of Education's new school complex, eventually will cross thousands of undeveloped acres and intersect with Hardy McManus Road. But county officials say it could be a decade or more before the project can open the vast, undeveloped areas for intensive development.
