Athens is ranked 13 in urban sprawl list

ATHENS, Ga. - The Athens area has appeared on another "sprawl" list. The metropolitan Athens area ranks as one of the fastest-urbanizing cities in the United States, according to a recent study. The three-county Athens metropolitan area checked in at No. 13 in the country when the Brookings Institution's Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy ranked nearly 300 U.S. urban areas on the rate that they converted land from forest and farm to residential and other urban uses from 1982 to 1997.

Stressing the importance of accurate statistics to the lives of average consumers and taxpayers, the National Association of Business Economists asked Mr. Clinton to consolidate the government's three main statistical agencies into a single high-level office similar to those in Great Britain and Canada.
