Races thrill audience, boat drivers

When you hit it right, you can flat-out fly. The need for speed compelled not only the racers but the spectators who showed up Friday on the banks of the Savannah River, which thrummed with the roar of high-speed machines as time trials began for the 13th annual Augusta Southern National Drag Boat Races. Organizers expected more than 15,000 spectators and about 100 boats from as far away as Canada and California to show up for the races, which continue today and Sunday. Tickets are $15 each day, and the gates open at 8 a.m.
