BACK IN TIME Dec. 18, 1930 A wintry blast, which swept over the entire South Tuesday night and left all of Dixie frozen and shivering, included Augusta in its itinerary. This city yesterday was in the grip of the bitterest freeze since 1917. Sleet, which fell all night, blanketed the city to such an extent that practically all business was stopped and automobile traffic was reduced to the necessary minimum. R.A. AUGUSTAWoman dies of head injuries A south Augusta woman who was beaten in her home died Sunday at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Margaret Speller Herring, 68, of the 2900 block of Ulm Road, had been in critical condition since Thursday, when she was apparently beaten by a wooden object. She suffered a fractured skull. Her husband found her in their home, which showed signs of forced entry, authorities said. As of Sunday night, no arrests had been made in the case. AUGUSTATwo people hurt in collision
AUGUSTAMan rapes woman in her residence A woman who answered her door Saturday was raped and robbed by an intruder, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report states. The 18-year-old woman told authorities she heard a knock on her mobile home in the 3000 block of Deans Bridge Road about 5 a.m. When she opened the door, a large man grabbed her around the neck, forced her onto a nearby mattress and ripped her clothes off. When the woman's screams woke up her baby, the intruder moved her to a bedroom and raped her, the report stated.
AIKEN COUNTYNo arrests made in man's shooting The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is investigating a domestic dispute Saturday night in Salley that sent a man to the hospital with a bullet wound. Kelvin Jackson, 37, of the 500 block of Julian Taylor Drive, was shot in the lower-right back between 8 and 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff's office. Mr. Jackson had been arguing with his common-law wife, the office reported.
AIKENDeputy gets hurt in arrest attempt The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is looking for the man who injured a deputy Saturday to avoid capture, said Lt. Michael Frank, office spokesman. When two deputies confronted a shoplifter at 4:30 p.m. in Dillard's at Aiken Mall, the man ran through the mall and into the parking lot. A car driven by another person was waiting for him, officials said.
