AUGUSTA, Ga. - Barbara Ann Rivers Hughes, 55, passed away Monday, January 8, 2007, at University Hospital. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at Platt's Funeral Home Chapel, 721 Crawford Ave., Augusta. Visitation will follow the service. Born November 9, 1951, in Battle Creek, Mich., Ms. Hughes lived most of her life in Augusta. She is the daughter of Mary Mullin Rivers and the late Joseph F. Rivers. A graduate of the Academy of Richmond County and Augusta College, Ms. Hughes earned an undergraduate degree in sociology and a Master of Science degree in psychology. Her caring and compassionate nature led her to social work, where she spent more than two decades as a case manager for the Richmond County Department of Family and Children Services. She later became a nationally certified vocational rehabilitation counselor and was a member of the Georgia Rehabilitation Association before her retirement in 2003. A lifelongnature-lover and generous spirit, she was beloved by all who knew her. Survivors include her daughter, Erin Elizabeth Hughes, Athens; her mother; a brother, Glenn Rivers, Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Jo Spark, Waco, Texas, and Cynthia Lewis, Augusta; nieces, Lauren Woodman and Meg Looney, Seattle, Wash.; and nephews, William "Josh" Lewis III, Thomasville, and Matthew and Benjamin Spark, Waco. In honor of her dedication to the environment, memorials may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, www.worldwildlife.org, or any other environmental organization.
